GOVERNMENT DOING ITS BEST.
(AUSTRALIAN-NBW ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION.)
(Received "February 15, 1 p.m.)
LONDON, 14th February.-' Replying to Mr. W. Brace's amendment to the. Address-in-Reply,2criticising the Government's Labour policy (reportd in an earlier message), Mr. Bonar Law said that never in history were the employers ... more ready to agree that the workers should have a' larger share of profits. The eight-hour day for railwaymen was a big step forward. The Government was. endeavouring to extend better conditions. It had not shown tendencies towards profiteers.
The Government was prepared to inquire into the question of the nationalisation of coal mines. Any amelioration would ,be retrospective. The . country was undoubtedly passing through anxious times, and the next few months would be critical, but he believed it would, be able to pull through. He urged the, employers to take their courtage in their hands, and not 'make, it necessary- to launch new enterprises. " The amendment' was negatived' by 311 votes to 59.
The Evans Bay Swimming Club's opening "social" of the season will tako placO -.-night. '*."■-'-■!-
