DEATH OF MR. C. C. KETTLE

Mr. Charles Cargill Kettle, formerly Stipendiary Magistrate at Auckland, died in that city' to-day. He was the eldest son of the late Mr. C. H. Kettle, of Dunedin, and was born there on 4th June, 1850. In July, 1873, he was at Dunedin admitted ■a- barrister of the Supreme Court, and for seventeen years practised his profession in his native city. On 21st February, 1890, he was appointed District Court judge for Wanganui and Taraiiaki, and. remained in that position until about seventeen years ago, when he was transferred to Auckland. When the District Courts were abolished, he became Stipendiary Magistrate in Auckland City, and held the appointment until he retired a few months ago, owing to ill-health. The late Mr. Kettle was a persistent advocate of the independence of the Bench, of Justice, and on severa? occasions he petitioned Parliament on the subject—favourable results from both Houses resulting. He has left a widow (now in London) and a grown-up family. One of his sons was killed at Gallipoli.
