Very unhappy domestic relations were unfolded at the Magistrate's Court this morning in a case in which Edward Hugh Thewwas oharged with assaulting his wife;; Ivy May 1 Thew. The wife and a friend gave evidence that Thew had returned borne in a- drunken condition and . had ' 'assaulted his wife, punching and kicking her, and knocking her down several times-. 1 The defendant stated that,he had been,attacked by the two women and had to "defend himself." His wife, he said, was no frail woman; "she can swing a chair as well as anyone I know." Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, ,S.M., said that the assault had been a most brutal one, which deserved a severe penalty. Mr. Pi W. Jackson, who appeared for the defendant, here made a plea that defendant should be penalised by a fine instead of being sent to gaol. The Magistrate agreed to this course, and imposed a fine -of £10, in default three months' imprisonment. An application for a eeparation order between the parties was adjourned till Monday next. - , '
