THEFTS ON THE WATERFRONT
"If sentences of 14 days' hard labour do not put a stop to thefts from shipping and the waterfront, I shall increase the sentences to something considerably stiffer," said Mr. F. V. Frazer, S.M., at the' Magistrate's Court this morning. Two seamen on the steamer Karamu, Patrick M'lntyre and Edward Hodson, pleaded guilty to stealing a case of whisky valued at £4, the property of the Union Steamship Company. Evidence was given that the officer on watch noticed that a hatch which had been fastened down on completion, of loading operations had been interfered with, arid when investigations were made, the' two mien were found under the influence of -liquor, and one case, with several flasks missing, was discovered in the forecastle. Each of the accused was sentenced to 14 days' hard labour.
"I did not see any harm in taking it," said Daniel Mutton, a fireman on the s.s. Karamu when charged with having stolen a quantity of sugar valued at 7s 6d, the property of the Union Steamship Company. "I doubt it," said Mr. Frazer, "otherwise you would not have called sugar 'washing' when stopped by.the constable." Mutton was. sent to gaol for 14 days with hard labour.
