WHEN THE HOTELS WERE CLO SED

The first charges" arising out of the neglect to conform with the instructions issued by; the Public Health Officer regarding the closing- of hotels were preferred against Mrs. F. W. Paulsen, licensee of the Carlton Hotel, and the barmaid .at the hotel, at the Magistrate's Oourt.lhjs morning. Mr; J. J.,M'Grath, who appeared for the defendants, said that at tbe time of the offence, the evening of 25th November, Mrs. Paulsen was not at the hotel, having been ordered to leave town for a few days' rest- after having nursed several influenza patients at the hotel. The barmaid admitted that a warning had been received from the police that no persons, boarders or otherwise, were to be-served with liquor, but the three men, who were boarders, pestered her so much that she served them to get rid of them. Under the circumstances, Mr. F, V. Frazer, S.M., said that he considered it justifiable to dismiss $ie information against the licensee as trivial, and as there were extenuating circumstances, a fine of £2 and costs would meet the charge against the barmaid. "If the men who were served are decent fellows," added Mr. Frazer, "they will pay the fine themselves!"
