GRATUITY FOR SOLDIERS
; DEFINITE ACTION. Though the Prime Minister has announced . that the Government' has declined to accede to the request of the Returned Soldiers' Association that retrospective allowances should be granted to the. dependents of men who volunteered before the scales were increased, the matter of giving consideration to long-service men has received attention. Sir James Allen statedi, in the House of Representatives last night that a Bill would be introduced to provide gratuities for long-service men. i l When he-spoke yesterday, Sir James' .did hot especially refer to married or single men. It is therefore taken that the extra payment will be in regardl to length;:Of service,. with no discrimination between married and single mpn. ' . . , The Bill, of course, will give members of the House a full opportunity to review the whole questidn of retrospective allowances.
Sir James Allen introduced this, afternoon in the House of Eepresentatives the Expeditionary Forces Amendment BilL He said it was estimated that the sum required to provide bonuses for the officers, non-commissioned officers, and men who have served overseas would be £1,250,000.
