The Hon. W. H. Herries is now at Rotorua, and will spend the week in making a tpur of his electorate; returning to Auckland next Saturday eyening. On the following night he will proceed to Wellington by the mail train.: Mr. Martin F. Baird, of Hastings, has 'been on a visit to Wellington. He was accompanied: by Mrs. Baird. Mr. Alfred Jolly, Inspector of National Bank of New Zealand, 1 was a passenger from the South by the Mararoa this morning. ■ ■ ■. Mr, Jam^s M'Laren, of the Oamaru Harbour Board staff, has been' appointed clerk of the Waitaki County Council. There were sixty-one applications. Lieutenant-Colonel J. G. Roaohe, formerly accountant of the Tourist and Health Department, and Chaplain A. J. Seamer, of Brooklyn, are returning to New Zealand. in a few days' time. The death is announced of Mr. Henry Thomas Batson, a resident of Palmerston for the past twelve years. Jn his younger days Mr. Batson, was in the JJritish AIW- . His, two sons are, in camp. . . Mr. Howard Hadley, examiner to the Associated" Board; of the E.A.M. and R.C.M., London, will probably arrive in Wellington to conduct the annual practical examinations on. 28th October. He is now in New Plymouth. •■ . ■ Attacks of influenza were responsible for ■ a small attendance at' the Petone Borough Council meeting last evening: Apologies for absence w,efe sent in, by Councillor^ J, M'Dougall and S. Newland, who were both suffering from the complaint. Mr. M. C. "Barnett, chief accountant of the Public Trust Department, is, spending a week in Ohristchurch. He is making a good" recpyory from his repent illness, but will spend a few weeks iij ■the North Island before resuming his duties. \, Mr. George Fred -Spponer, of Palmerston North, is dead, aged 75. , He was born in Worcester, England, and arrived in New Zealand .44 .' years ago. . For some years he was in business in Christchurch as a coachbuilder, and .afterwards he went farming at Tauranga/ . .' ■ ' The Mayor of , Petone intimated last evening, that Gunner A. Colquhoun and Private V. E. Ecllin had given, their lives in the service of their country in. France. A vote of sympathy with their relatives was. passed by the.council. The father of Gunner Colqukourr is an ex 7 councillor. Councillor John Kyle took his scat at the Petone Borough Council last evenr ing, and was congratulated by the Mayor (Mr. J.; W. M'Ewan) and Councillors E. Tpvey and J. Churchouse. Cpuncijlop Kyle thanked the speakers, and promised his best endeavours in the interests of the borough. Highly eulogistic references were made by the Mayor of Petone last evening to, the ability, courtesy, and tact of Mr W J. Gardner, the Town Clerk, who is, shortly going into camp. The Mayor's, remarks were endorsed by Councillors M'Kenzie, Brockelbank, and Tovey, and the council passed a motion conveying its best wishes. to Mr. Gardner. Mr. - W. F. Sturman was, by special formal resolutions, made acting Town Clerk and Treasurer, and Pveturning'Officer.
