PETONE AFFAIRS
MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL
The fortnightly meeting of the Petone Borough Council 'was held last evening. Present: Mr. J. W. M'Ewan (Mayor), and Councillors C. P. Brockelbank, ■ J. Churchouse, J. Kyle, D. M'Kenzie, E. Jones, and E. Toyey. .
The Health Department reported a case of diphtheria in the borough.
The Rugby Union regretted its' inability to pfc.y the Petone-Poneke match at Petone, as the gate, being devoted to pati-iotic ■ purposes, would, be larger in Wellington owing to the poor train service- to Petone. ' :'"
The Automobile Club drew attention to the bad state of the Hutt-road. It was decided to reply that thft best metal procurable was being used on the road 1.

Councillor Churchbuse drew attention to the fact that 1 borough employees had been employed as poll clerks, etc ; , at the ■ recent by : election. He considered such positions should be given to returned soldiers.'. Ho also.stated that the council's rubbish tip and sanitary depot ■ was in a disgraceful condition, and was a menace to health.
