DESTRUCTION OF AN AEROPLANE
AN ACCIDENT AT SOCKBURN,
(BI TELEGRAPH.—PRBSB ASSOCIATION.)
' C'HRISTCHURCH, 27th. Sept. One of the Canterbury Aviation Company's aeroplanes was destroyed bjr fire at: Sockburn Aerodrome yesterday. This type of accident is enough in the flying schools oFthe Old' World. A pupil who had gone; through his training in, goodl style .and was ready to undergo the test for his ticket was about to make a flight. He took-off a little too suddenly, and the nose oi the machine bumped the ground. That occurrence- in itself is a very ordinary one, but it so happened that on this occasion the jar which the machine suffered caused the petrol pipe to burst. The. escaping petrol was ignited 'by a. spark, from the engine, and the flames quickly, spread to the nacelle. The pupil got out of the machine without suffering any harm. Several members of . the company's staff promptly ran to the burning 'plane with a fire extinguisher. They saved' the engine, but the 'plane itself was destroyed.
