AUSTRIANS KEPT THE LINE OF RETREAT OPEN
LONDON, 13th September. iA German official message states :—ln anticipation of an attack, the evacuation' of the St. Mihiel salient, which has long been under consideration, was commenced a few days 'ago. The French advanced to the heights east of the Mease, but wore repulsed. We temporarily lost the Combres (or Les Eparges) height, but it was recaptured by the Landwehr. Ausfro-Hungarians, south of Qombres, by strong resistance, assured the retreat of the divisions at St Mihiel. The enemy gained ground at Thiaucourt. The evacuation of the salient was completed at night undisturbed.
LONDON, 14th September. A German official message states : The enemy felt his way forward east, ward of Combres and .north-west-of Thiaucourt.
