MINE-OWNERS' PROFITS

Interviewed by a, Christchurch Sun. representative, Mr. I. James, manager of the Point Elizabeth and Liverpool State Mines, expressed the confident. opinion that the coal owners are not making High profits. He said that the cost of all mining stores had increased enormously in the war period. For instance, mine rails, which were previously £7 per ton, are now £22 ; rail spikes, previously £26, now £80; corrugated iron, previously. £18, now £90. There has also been a 100 per cent, increase on other lines. Against this, the price of ■State screened coal has only boren increased f.o.b. Greymouth by 3s per ton, and unscreened by 2s. Mr. James said that his opinion was that the middlemen were doing-well at the expense of the public. The miners' average wage at Point Elizabeth was 23s per shift, and' at Liverpool 19s 9d.
