POSITION.
NEW YORK, 17th August. Sir Rabindranath Tagore has cabled to his United States publishers a copy of a letter received from Lord Chehnsford sympathising with the dragging in unwarrantedly of Sir Rabindranath's name in the San Francisco trial of Hindus accused of a breach of American neutrality laws. Lord Chelmsford says he is convinced there is no foundation for any allegation that Sir Rabindranath used his influence with the Japanese Government to induce Japan to recognise the independence of India.
[A number,of Hindus and German officials were arrested last year accused of plotting to overthrow British, rule in India. . Tho scheme involved the shipping of arms and ammunition to India,to certain seditious natives there. Dr. Chanader Chakraberty, a Hindu physician, admitted receiving £12,000 from Lieutenant Wolf yon Igel, formerly secretary to Captain yon Papen (tho notorious German military attache at Washington), to start a revolution in India.]
