SATURDAY'S MATCHES

TBENTHAM DEFEATS FEATHERS'

TON.

There was indeed a military flavour about Saturday's footb.aU, whoa teams representing tho Trcntham and Feathei'ston Camps met on the Athletic Park. Tho latter team, as a matter of fa-ct, was, comiMised of players from the 44th Beinforceineiiifl, as the representative team of the c-amp was engaged at Carterton. The game %vas a strenuoiiij one, hut not by any means brilliant, .ilthougu there were a few bright flashes of individua.l play. Txentham had the best of tho opening exchanges, and. aided by good lino kicking, worked their way down to the Feathe'.'ston quarter, but the defence proved too strong for them. Tho forwards of the 44ths rushod play to centre, but after a period, of even play in mid-field the Trentham backs got going niceiy, a good passing run ending in Davidson scoring. The try was not converted. E. Roberts, for the 44ths, was prominent in some good defensive work, and he also made several good openings, which his confreres were un able to take full advantage of. Trentham kept up the pressure on their opponents, and in another good passing rush Heap managed to get across near the corner. Again the try was not converted. . Six points to the bad, the 44ths played up with increased 1 vigour, and Kept Trentham busily engaged in defending their )ine. Over-eagerness fobbed them of several good opportunities of opening their scoring account, bat the .first half ended with the totals unchanged.

There was a period of dull play aitei the resumption, mai'ked only by an occasional paEsing"*bout, indulged in by the Trentham back division. From one of these Howie got over far out, and Davidson made a good, but ineffectual, attempt to add the extra points. Then came the turn of the 44ths.' A scramb ling rush carried piay to the Trentham twenty-five, and from a line out, Stuart got possession, and forced his way over. Roberts added the major' points. Afmost immediately afterwards Peters scored for Trentham as the result of a continued forward movement. From this on to the end of the game play was all in favour of Trentham, who pressed their opponents continually. Further tries were secured for them by Rogers, Packer, and Davidson, but although the kicks at goal were fairly easy,' none of the tries was converted. The game (.-iidod with the scores: —Trentham 21, 44th Reinforcements 5.
