Thomas 0. Toon, a returned soldier, touring the North Island on the railwayticket issued to returned soldiers, found the three weeks provided for by the, ticket all too short, and therefore unwisely sought to extohd his tour by altering the final date, 13th June, on his ticket. On 20th June he presented his ticket to the guard on' the New Plymouth-Wel-lington mail train ; but the guard, being somewhat suspicious of the appearance of the ticket, examined it closely, and trouble followed. Toon pleaded guilty when charged .before Mr. •S. B. M'Carthy, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court this morning, and on the charge of altering the tick»t was convicted,, and ordered to pay the fare (£2 2s 4d) and costs amounting to 31s. On a second charge of having used an expired railway ticket, Toon was convicted and discharged.

On behalf of Samuel Mason,, who did not appear at the. Magistrate's Court this morning, Mr. H. F. O'Leary pleaded guilty to five charges regarding the carrying of liquor into the no-license area of South Wellington. Inspector Marsack said that the offence consisted in the carrying of liquor by Mason when he had no copy of the orders in his possession. Mason did produce an order of a kind when accosted, but it had been filled in by himself and was not signed by the purchaser. The prosecution was one result of a raid on a sly grog-shop in Newtown some time ago. Mr. O'Leary said that the offences were committed through a misunderstanding. Mason had a general order for liquor to be delivered to a, house in Gordonstreet, not in Riddiford-street, where the police raid was made, and when orders were given for lots of two gallons the defendant had simply, filled the orders in himself, considering that he had thereby conformed , with requirements. Mr. S. E. M'Carthy, S.M., imposed a fine of £2 and 7s costs on one count, and on the- others. Mason was convicted and discharged.
