SUBURBAN TRAIN SERVICE
TO TUB BDIIOR.
Sir, —The vapidity with -which the Railway Department placed ap extra train at the disposal of a' few Civil servants is. nothing short of marvellous, though it might mean that other sections of the community, are at last going to receive some consideration. Taking this for granted, I wish to draw attention to a matter that causes quite a lot of discomfort and could be easily overcome by the Department without entailing extra labour fit expensb. On Saturday the 12.15 train to Paekakariki is well patronised, even during the winter months, and much trouble is experienced in obtaining tickets by those who cannot get away from business before 12 noon On rushing to the ticket office they find a queue waiting, many booking by the Main Trunk train that leaves 30 minutes later, viz., 12.45 p.m. Surely this could be remedied. Summer time is approaching, and many patrons would be pleased to find that better arrangements had been made. I would suggest that a portable ticket box be placed at that end of the station from where the train leaves, selling suburban tickets . only.
Another matter that requires altering is the fares. From Wellington to Plimmerton second week-end ticket 2s, same ticket at Johnsonville, seven miles nearer Plimmerton, 2s Bd. Will some one kindly explaifn t<his apparent anomaly? Repeatedly lam approached by residents up tjie lino asking me to purchase them tickets, thereby saving them Bd. In conclusion, aUow me to state, that the question of fares mentioned 1 above has more than once been placed before the Railway Department per medium of deputation and received the usual reply, "Will look into the matter." —I am, etc., ■ R.H.H. | 14th August.
