POACHING AT WAINUI
At the Lower Hutt Magistrate's Court to-day, before Messrs. 6. Chapman, A. Y. Lees, and J. Wilkins, J.P.s, the ranger of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society (Mr. Wilton) proceeded against H. C. Russell, E. M'Arthur, W. H. Phillips, and N. M. Russell on three charges —(1) Killing native ganie, to wit pigeons and a tui, at the Wainui waterworks; (2) trespassing on the Wainui waterworks property; and (3) obstructing the ranger in the execution of his duty. All the defendants pleaded guilty to the charges with th<? exception that they denied shooting the tui, while the fourth stated that the bird had been shot by accident. They also denied obstructing the ranger, but admitted refusing to give their names (a technical act of obstruction). The ranger asked for a substantial penalty, and described the offence as a serious one, but in view of the straightforward statements of the accused the Bench fined each the minimum penalty of £5 each on one charge, and convicted and discharged them on the other. No order was made for the return of the firearms, which had been seized by the ranger. *
