AUCKLAND SOFT GOODS EMPLOYEES

There has been an interesting development in connection with the industrial, dispute originated by the Auckland Soft Goods Employees' Union, whose case has been freely discussed, in Labour circles. When the union»appeared be"ore the Arbitration Court that authority vofused tho application for an award, and, as a result, there were protest* u;pm unions aff"ovei' New Zealand, who ifserted'that the Court had exceeded its powers. However, for the time being, the judgment had to be taken as final, ■as there is no provision for, an appeal' from the decisions of the Arbitration Court. The union, however, was far from satisfied, and has now filed a new dispute, which will come befors the Conciliation Council in Auckland on the 30th'inst.- Failing a* settlement before the council., the application will again go to tho Court, ..and the union intends to" take every possible step to prove its right to an award. Tile case is one which will be watcned with considerable interest. The union claims that since it was last before the Court it has increased its membership.
