LABOUR DAY
BIG- DEMONSTRATION BEING-
ARRANGKD.
It is intended that Labour Day ' this year will be worthily celebrated in Wellington. Labour Day falls on 28th October, and already., the. necessary .arrangements are being taken,in hand. As in the past, the proceeds will be devoted to the Trades Hall Fund, and now that a definite scheme.is before" unionists—the purchase of the late Dr. Martin's residence in Vivian-street, and the erection, at a later date, of a permanent home for, Labour—it is anticipated that the demonstration will be a greater success than ever before. Tho great interest which has already been firoused v.-as indicated by the large attendance at the initial meeting of the Labour Day Committee, held at the Trades Hall last evening. Mr. M. J. Reardon, president of the -Trades and Labour Council, presided, and ~Mx. John Read was appointed secretary.
It was decided that the chief feature should be a big sports gathering at Newtown Park, to be held on similar lin.es to (hat of last year. It is expected, howover, that tho sports will be on » much bigger scale than formerly. A special ■committee was set up to arrange for a big concert in the Town Hall on Labour night, and a, proposal to hold a Labour demonstration on the Sunday night preceding Labour Day was approved. It was also decided to request the managers of the secondary schools in Wellington to errant a full holiday. _ In the past tho holiday hae been confined to the primary schools.
