SHOP ASSISTANTS' FEDERATION

ORGANISATION PROCEEDING.

The work of organising the new Shop Assistants' Federation, formed with the object of securing amendments to the Shops and Offices Act, is proceeding satisfactorily. The indications a,re that the movement will be taken up enthusiastically in all the centres. The secre-. tary (Mr. R. M'Keen) has received a letter from Christchurch stating that a conference of representatives of the Jewellers', Drapers', Grocers', Butchers', and Hairdressers' Unions would be held on the 22nd inst., when the idea will be discussed. A similar conference is being arranged in Auckland. Up to the present no advice has come from Bunedin, but it is expected that a similar step will be taken there very shortly. Included in the initial business considered by the federation in Wellington was a discussion in regard to the proposed new heating regulations for factories and shops. In reply to a letter, the Hon. W. H. Herries (Acting-Min-ister for Labour) has informed the federation that the regulations have not yot been completed. An opportunity wouldbe given the- federation to consider the same and to make suggestions before they were gazetted.
