A NARROW ESCAPE

Thar© was a narrow escape from a serious accident at the wharf to-day. The Poherua, laden with coal, was being discharged ait the Railway Wharf with the aid of the grab, a'very heavy contrivjmce, lifting about a ton of coal each time. The grab had been let down into the ship's hold and had filled with coal. Wh«n it was being raised, and just before it swung round on to the wharf, the hook on the grab to which the hoisting chain was attached snapped clean off, &nd the grab, with its weight of coal, fell back into the ship. Luckily no men were working in the hold ait the time, and it is considered that if they had been a very serious accident would have been inevitable. Had the grab broken above the wharf the result would probably have been just as disastrous. The men who examined the break claim that there was a distinct flaw in the metal.
