Wood .blocking., for-streets was under discussion at the Engineers' Conference, and- the relative merits of karri and jarrali (West Australian timbers) was referred to. Mr. R. W. Holmes (En-gineer-m-Chief to the Public Works De- X partment) gave it as his opinion that karri is utterly worthless for street pav-' ing. He mentioned the striking similarity in appearance of the two timbers, and told members of an interesting experiment to determine which is which. The method, Mr. Holmes said, however, which is not absolutely infallible, is to take a small splinter of each, light- it, and watch the ash. ' If the ash if black the timber is jarr'ah, but in the case of karri the ash is white.
