SEVERE EARTHQUAKE SHOCK
One of the sharpest shocks of earthquake that has been experienced here for some time past aroused most of the people of Wellington about 1.45 this morning. • The main shock, which was preceded by a slight tremor, set crockery and glassware rattling, and for a few moments (it was quite a protracted quake), caused considerable alarm.
The Post's special correspondent at Masfcerton telegraphs that a violent and sustained shock of earthquake was experienced there at 1.45 this morning. The residents were considerably alarmed, as the houses creaked and crockery rattled. The movement appeared to be from north to south. No damage is reported. A Press Association message from New Plymouth states that a. sharp, prolonged earthquake was felt at 1.41 a.m., followed by a shorter about 8.45 a.m., but no damage is reported. Te Kuiti reports two shocks at 1.50 a.m., the first slight, the secpnd decided.
A very prolonged and violent earthquake was felt at Hawera at 1.50 this morning. No damage was done. There was also a slight shock at 8.40 a.m.— Press Association.
Two earth tremors of more severity than usual wore felt, at Taumarunui at 2 a.m. and 8.45 a.m. (states a Press Association message).
