THE WRECKAGE AT TE ARAROA

\. GISBORNE, 18th February. T The wreckage at Te Araroa is about two miles from the township, in the 'direction of Hicks Bay. It is portion of a sailing vessel 125 ft long. The upper works have gone, but there ,is evidence of a number of charred benzine cases and hundreds of benzhie tin labels. Th 3 indications are that the vessel was burned from the water-line up. Quite recently a man's hat was found bearing the mark of a San Francisco firm, and inside the band a piece of newspaper dated. 17th June, 1917. The only other •personal property are American coins •dated 1917, a pair of spectacles, and a set of teeth.
The Secretary of the G.P.0., Wellington, has received the following report from Gisborne :—"The postmaster at To Araroa reports :—'About 125 feet of the Iceol of a schooner was found on the beach on Sunday, two miles north of Te ■Araroa. The vessel appears to havo been .-burnt' from the deck to the water-line, ;"A large'quantity of tin taps and handles 'belonging to. benzine tins was found on board. Several American coins (somn ,', dated 1917), and part of a San Francisco newspaper bearing date 17th June, 1917, iwere also found. Up to the present noIthing has been found to indicate the ■name of the vessel.' '"
