OBITUARY
ADMIRAL LEICESTER KEPPEa.
(Received September 24, 8 a.m.) LONDON, 23rd September
Rear-Admiral Leicester Keppel is dead. [The late Admiral Keppel entered the Navy as a, midshipman m 1854, and saw much active service in the Black Sea. and the Baltic during the war against Russia. In 1861 he was engaged in.the suppression of the slave tade on the East Coast of Africa, and captured several slave dhows under fire. Later, he served in the expedition up the Zambesi with Dr. Livingstone. In 1858 and the following year he was engaged in operations against Chinese pirates, for which he was twice officially thanked, and some years later he commanded punitive expeditions on the Niger and the Congo, his skill and gallantry again receiving official recognition. He retired a. few years -ago.s .
