PORT NICHOLSON YACHT CLUB
ANNUAL REPOET.
■ During the season (says the annual report of tihe Port Nicholson Yacht Club) the committee made a special effort to encourage racing among the smaller boats. With this object in view, it was decided to start a series 'of races in Eyans Bay, which were to be sailed over a course in that "bay. The initial race was very successful, and the pros- > pects were bright, but a sad boating fatality occurred in the bay, whereby one of the most popular smaller boat owners lost his life. This seemed to •dampen the enthusiasm, but the committee is -confidant that much can foe done in the direction of encouraging the smaller boats, and very strongly recommends to . the incoming committee this important subject for their serious consideration. The annual inter-club races for 14ft centre-board boats -was held at Pefcone, and the club's representative, Mr. L. .M'Gregor, in the "Nan," after many years of striving, brought the cup back -to the keeping of the club, and the committee takes this opportunity of heartily congratulating- Mr. M'Gregor. The Wind_ar Cup was won by Mr. Breen's '"Gin'ty," after a series of races. The committee strongly urges all younger members to get a boat and compete for this valuable cup.- The committee endeavoured to bring off a Veterans 7 Race 0 but owing to bad weather conditions the race did not eventuate; but the committee would suggest to the incoming committee the advisability of getting the race off early in the season. The committee, has, as far as possible, kept a, record of all men who .have fierved in .the present great -war, and hopes at the -end of the war to place on record a complete Jist of members who have "done their bit." As far- as the committee has been able to ascertain 54 men, of a membership of 130, have been sent. The following members have died in the cause of Empire:—E. Ward, Oscar . Freyberg, Paul * Freyberg, H. Lucas, A. Benton, — Perry, A. Beaumont, 'T. Gray, C. Salmon.
