THE WELLINGTON CLUB,

Good progress continues to be made in the Wellington Chess Club's annual handicap tourney for the "Petherick" trophy and other prizes. Mr. E. S. Taylor, a new member, is now leading with 5 wins and 1 draw to his credit. The next best scores are: Barnes, 5-2, S. Mackay 6-2, Hughes 4-1, Clutten 4-2, Purchas 3-1, J. A. Connell, l£-i, and Faulknor 3-3. Two ladder matches were completed last week—Gyles, sen. (defender), winning from H. A. Ward (2-1), and S. Faulknor (challenger) winning from G. H. Clutteu (2-0). A year ago to-day the club's former lion, secretary and treasurer, ,'Mr. W. Cowper Hill, died in France from wounds received two days earlier. Members hold him in affectionate remembrance, both for his personalty and .for his valued labours at a critical time, when, owing to many adverse causes, it seemed as if the good old club would have to be wound up.
