BOARDS OF "OUTSIDERS"
CONDEMNATION BY FEDERATION
OF LABOUR.
Mr. Hiram Hunter, secretary of the United Federation of Labour, has sent the following letter to the Prime Minister:—"lt Has been freely reported that the National Efficiency Board has placed its resignation in your hands, and that the alleged .resignation has been considered by the National Executive of the United Federation of Labour, which resolved to urge the Government to accept the same. In urging this course, we do not desire to reflect upon the members of the board in any way, but to point out that in our opinion the Government is far too prone to evade its responsibilities by appointing boards and commissions to 'enquire into and report' upon questions which are vital', to the well-being of the community. We hold thai when the people elect eighty members of Parliament to attend to the affaire of State, they should do their duty. If they are not qualified to attend to the business of the country, or are too tired or unwilling to fulfil their obligations to their constituents in general, as manifested by the appointment of outsiders to these boards and commissions, why are they mot straightforward enough to admit their failure and insincerity, resign, and give the people a chance to elect others wore courageous arid willing to render the service for which they were elected?"
