BRITISH MINISTRY
FURTHER CHANGES NOTIFIED,
(ADI. AND N.Z. CABLE ASSN. AND. RBUIER.)
LONDON 17th August.
The Press Bureau states:—Mr. John Hodge (Minister of Labour) has been appointed Minister of Pensions (in succession to Mr. Barnes, who replaces Mr. Arthur Henderson in the War Cabinet).
Mft G. H. Roberts (Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Trade) succeeds Mr. Hodge as Minister of Labour. Brigadier-General A. C. Geddes, late Director-General of Recruiting, becomes Minister for National Service.
Mr. G. J. Wardle (Labour M.P.) becomes Parliamentary Secretary to. the Board of Trade.
[Brigadier-General Geddes was appointed Director-General of Recruiting" in May, 1916. Mr. Neville Chamberlain, late Director-General of NaftoTial Service, resigned recently, owing, it was stated, to the transfer of recruiting to the National Service iDepartment in a manner contrary to his suggestions. In July last it was reported that the National Service scheme had broken down, and was shortly to be abandoned. General Geddes's new appointment suggests that a fresh effort to organise more effectively the nation's man-power for civilian and military service is about to be made under one controlling authority.]
