SOLDIER FINED £10

SEQUEL TO LAST SATURDAY'S RIOT.

The case in which William Ernest Fordham, a corporal in the 35th Reinforcements, was charged with disturbing Sergeant Cruickshanks while in the execution of his duty, was concluded before Mr. S. ]<:. M'Carthy, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday afternoon. For the defence, Mr. P. W. Jackson said that the accused was a married man residing in Cuba-street. He submitted that Fordham's action could not very well be described as disturbing the police. AH the accused had been taxed with saying was, "I am an officer, you cannot interfere with me," and; "Don't you hit a, soldier; don't you interfere with a soldier." His conduct was perhaps silly and stupid, but that was all. Accused denied making use of the words attributed to him, and stated that he did nothing to disturb the police in any way.

The Magistrate considered that the case had been proved, and imposed a fine of £10, with the option of one month's imprisonment.
