TAITA CEMETERY BOARD
INCREASED ■ FUNDS REQUIRED,
The members of the Taita Cemetery Board waited on the Petone Council last evening, and asked it to reconsider its decision to grant only £15 to the board, instead of the £20 asked for. Mr. Judd, for the board, said the board had a deficiency of £7 9s 4d last year, and its sole source of income was from burial fees and the • sale 'of plots. It was faced with an increased expenditure, for its sexton must now be employed all the week instead of four days, as previously.. Nearly half of the burials were from Petone, and the Hutt borough and Hutt County councils would only make their grants of £20 each on condition that Petone. gave a similar amount. The board had been in existence for ten years, and during that time had only asked' Petone for sums of £5 6s 8d and £5.
Mr. Lodder said the cemetery, was. now kept in good order, and if that state of affairs was to continue the funds asked for were absolutely essential. No one desired to see the cemetery in an untidy condition.
Mr. Wakeham said if the board could not get funds it would .have to hand over thocemetery to oneof thelocal bodies, and in that case he was sure it would not be as cheaply conducted.
On the motion of Councillor M'Kenzie the amount asked for was granted.
