£500 DAMAGES
ACTION AGAINST NEW ZEALAND
SHIPPING COMPANY.
The civil action in which Richard Wright, carpenter, proceeded against the" New Zealand Shipping Company to recover the sum of £500, as damages for injuries received in the course of his employment on the steamer Ruahine, on Ist July, was concluded after The Post went to press yesterday. The case was heard before his Honour Mr. Justice Chapman and a common jury of four. Mr. P. J. O'Regan appeared for the plaintiff and Mr. M. Myers for the defendant company. , The following issues were submitted to the jury:—(l) Was the defendant company guilty of negligence? (2) Could plaintiff hav.e reasonably avoided the accident? (3) What damages, if any, is plaintiff entitled to ? The verdict was in favour of plaintiff in every way, and the damages were assessed at £500, the full amount of the claim.
