The secretary of the New South Wales Alliance has obtained statistics from the Collector of Customs showing that during the half-year prior to 6 o'clock closing, duty was paid on 12,277,680 gallons of beer, and 659,789 gallons of spirits, while for the halfyear under 6 o'clock closing, duty was paid on 11,671,660 gallons of beer, and 465,056 gallons of spirits, the decrease being : Beer 606*019 gallons, spirits 194,732 gallons, while the decrease in Customs'and_excis"e duty... was £187,104. He claims that as: the.;.;duty, represents about one-fourth of the selling value of drink to the' community, the drink bill for the six months of 6. o'clock closing dropped £750,000.
