MAGISTRATE'S COURT
To-day's sitting of the Magistrate's Court was presided over by Mr. W G. Riddell, S.M. For drunkenness, Charles Alfred Tomlinson was fined 20s, with the alternative of serving three days' imprisonment, while' three first offenders were leniently dealt with. A soldier named William Smith denied using obscene language in Lambton-quay, but tho evidence was against him, and he was fined £3, v/ith the option of fourteen days' imprisonment. A seaman named Thomas Quinn, who unlawfully absented himself from, an oversea steamer, was sentenced to twenty-four hours' imprisonment, and. ordered to be placed on board the vessel if it sails prior to the expiration of the term. "You know you are liable to a fine of £20 for tliis, defendant," remarked tho Magistrate to Charles Francis Leatham, who pleaded guilty to trespassing on his wife's property during the currency of a prohibition order. Leatham had no excuse to make for his conduct, and was fined £3, with tho alternative of fourteen days' imprisonment.
