TRAM LEAVES THE RAILS
AND CRASHES INTO A BUILDING,
NO ONE BADLY INJURED.

AUCKLAND, This Day.
About midnight a tram going down a rather steep gradient on the Khyber Pass-road got out of control, • left the rails, and crashed into an alleyway between the Savings Bank and the hotel in Newmarket.
The car contained five passenfers. All escaped uninjured. The motorman, Halley. stuck to his post. . He was cut about the face, but walked to a doctor's residence. '■
Part of the outer., wall of the hotel was torn away, and the remainder of the wall knocked out of perpendicular. The private bar was completely wrecked, and the stock and, some of the bedrooms overhead considerably damaged. These rooms .were not occupied. The wifs of the proprietor was thrown out of bed in a room at the back of the premises. A boarder who occupied another bedroom was also out of bed.
The bank, built of brick, was damaged to a slight extent. The tramcar was badly damaged.
