THE GERMAN COLONIES
MR, LONG JUSTIFIES HIMSELF.
LONDON, 20th February.
Mr. W. H. Long (Secretary of State for the Colonies), replying to Mr. IS". E. Buxton, said that his recent speech was delivered in his official capacity as Colonial Secretary. He was expressing the opinions of those whom he was bound to represent—namely, the Dominions and colonies, besides many people here. Mr. Long denied the allegation that his language had created a difficulty with America.
[Mr. _ Long, in a speech at Westminster, said: "We have taken possession of different German colonies in different parts of. the world as a consequence of the war. I speak with knowledge and responsibility, and as a representative of the Overseas Dominions, who are the pride and, glory of the Empire to-day, when I say: *Let no man think that these territories will ever return to German rule.'"]
