AUCKLAND, 21st February. The conference of the Industrial Corporation of New Zealand was opened today._ Mr. S. J. Harbutt, the Auckland president, was in the chair. In his inaugural address the president advocated the holding of a "Now Zealand Day" throughout the Dominion, renaming , one of the Government holiday The conference resolved.: —"That the Government be asked at the earliest possible date to impose duty on the export of all New Zealand-grown timber, with a view to conserving it for dairying and other industries of the Dominion, due consideration being given to existing contracts." It was also resolved: "That the executive be requested to place before the Industrial Efficiency Board the 'importance of scientific research in industries." A lecture on "Hydro-electric Power" was delivered by Mr. S. Irwin Crookes, and a resolution was passed urging on the Government the desirability oi establishing hydro-electrical power plants in the various centres of the Dominion, for the purposes of lighting and working industries. A paper dealing with the apprentice question was given'by Messrs. J. Mainland and T. Ballinger, of Wellington.
