NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By -"Sir Lancelot.")

Mr. G. D. Greenwood yesterday added to his excellent record in the Egmont Stakes. Two years ago he won with Emperador—who won the Egmont Cup tho previous year, and in the Egmont Stakes last year ran second to Bimeter. The black horse won again yesterday. A good contest was expected between the South Island representative and Bisogne (winner of the Railway Handicap and Royal Stakes at Ellerslie). They carried the full penalty of 101b each, and at tho finish were separated by Mr. T. H. LowTy's two-year-old Estland. The full brother to Bjorneborg, who has not yet won a race, is putting up quite a respectable record as a place-getter. Yesterday made the seventh timo this season he has finished in the money. Bimeter had only one previous win to his credit this season, when he won the Stewards' Handicap at Riccarton. Bisogne has won four races this season.

Bimoter and Tete-a-Tete, both ■ five-year-olds, are the two best old horses in commission over sprint courses. At present there does not appear a great deal between them over six furlongs. They met twice at Trenth'am. In the Telegraph Handicap, six furlongs, Bimeter (9.3) ran second and Tete-a-Tete (9.1) third. In the Kelbum Plate, four furlongs, Bimeter (9.1) was third and Tete-a-Tete (8.12) fourth. Sea Pink, who is now trained by the Now Zealander G. Delaney, appears to be back to his best form. Recently he won the Moonee Valley' Handicap, ran second in the Bagot Handicap at Flemington, won the Anniversary Handicap at Caulfield, and yesterday won the Hobart Cup, carrying top weight (9.7). This was the first occasion on which the Hawkes Bay sportsman's colours were carried in Tasmania. He has now been successful in all the States except West Australia.

The Dash Hack, on the opening day of the Marlborough Meeting, is a halfmile flutter, weight 8.7, and is not a handicap. The best of those engaged are Waimatoa, Merry Andrew, and Lady General. The last-named ran two good races on the concluding day at Foxton. In her second attempt she ran second to Starengo, a winner on the first day, to whom she was conceding 101b. The three members of Mr. T. H. Lowry's team taken to Hawera by F. Davis added 800 soys to their owner's winning account yesterday. The 101b- penalty Nystad carried for the Trentham win brought his impost up to within a stone of Tete-a-tete. Without this extra weight he had a good chance of defeating the top weight. The other placegetter (Interlude) ran two. good races at Marton last month. She defeated the Fordell representative (Gang Awa') each day at Marton, and he was among the also-started division yesterday. Golden Grafton and Veto were also unplaced. This pair were successful at Taranaki and Stratford respectively during the holidays. Yesterday's running makes them out to be only fair second-raters. Tete-a-tete scored her only previous win this season in the Electric Plate at Riccarton. . ■

The Opaki trainer, J, T. Jamieson, is taking Te Opai, Otter, and Splendidus to the Marlborough 'Meeting. He won two doubles at the last meeting with Splendidus and Franbonnet. Otter is engaged in two events on the first day. If reserved for the Ugbrooke Welter, seven furlongs, he may be sent out favourite, as he is such a good beginner. In the Clandeboye Welter, seven furlongs, at Manawatu, he defeated amongst others Rockbound and Marsinah. At Blenheim Otter allows Rockbound 91b for the beating, which will be reduced to 41b if an apprentice is put up. At Manawatu Rockbound conceded Marsinah 171b and a beating. The latter concedes the Porirua colt lib in the Ugbrooke Welter.

Mr. Duncan Campion, who used to race Ballarat, is having a good innings with the hurdler Record (Renown — Famous). He carried top weight and scored in the Ohawe Hack Hurdles at Hawera yesteiday. The field he Beat was anything but a good one. The runner-up, Camp Guard (Campfire—Vanguard mare), is a, beginner at the game. He was in receipt of only 6lb from Combustion, who has not shown the improvement expected since lie somewhat unexpectedly beat a useful field at Marton' early in (the season. Record had earlier in the season won at Wanganui, Waverley, and Taranaki, and after he runs out his hack engagements 'will have to comp&te in open company. Perrier, who has recently. been sold out of the Fordell stable, has been engaged at the MarlboTOugh Meeting. J. O'Shea has now ridden the winner of the Egmont Cup two years in succession. He was on Merrie Roe twelve months ago, and steered Egypt yesterday. This was the first win o-f thp Brother to Desert Gold as a three-year-old. The • field he beat yesterday was probably the weakest that ever contested the race.' Egypt and Analogue (who acted as runner-up) were both handicapped for the Wellington Cup, but neither contested the race. In yesterday's race Egypt was meeting Analogue on 51b worse terms than at Trentham. After the success of the stable mate in the Flying Handicap, Egypt was sent out a strong favourite for the Cup. All Black has sired the winner^ of. two Cups within a fortnight, and -Black-All may improve tho record at Gisborne. It often happens thait a change .of ownership brings about a change of luck. The Egmont Cup has been run continuously since 1882. Yesterday was the first occasion it was won by a. representative carrying Mr. T. H. Lowry's colours. All Wai 1, who has been engaged in the Maiden and handicap events at . the Mariborough Meeting, is a fitlj-brother to El Gallo and a stable-mate of Daytime and Samisen.

Revocation, who scored in the'Meremere Hack Flat Handicap, has an excellent private reputation up the coast, but failed to run up to it at the holiday meetings. He is a full-brother to Encore, by Cheshire (Tarporley—May Bud), a horse imported by the late Mr. G. G. Stead. The runner-up, Madam Ristori (Marble Arch —Ristori), was among the winners at Stratford. She is only a pony, and too small to carry weight successfully. The winner of the Waipapa Hack Flat, seven furlongs, Deeside, was also sired by Cheshire, and was among the winners at Stratford at New Year time.

F. Davis lias entered several of his team in the handicap events at Woodville, "where tliey are trained. Among the number are Beltane, Tete-a-tete, and Pourparler. The Highden filly Sunny Climes has been racing consistently recently, but without any luck, and when she wins it will not be out of her turn. "-At Hawera yesterday she ram second to Hushman in the Wareroa Welter, seven furlongs. Twelve mouths ago Hushman was considered a champion in the hack class along the- coast, and won a race each diiy_ at Hawe,r«... He. Ijag agi dons

much this season in open company, and scored his first win yesterday. Normanby, who scored in the race for gentlemen riders at Egmont yesterday, is by the Lochiel horse Glenullin —a Taranaki Cup winner—from Surf (dam of Ebb Tide, Sylvan Tide, and other performers'). Normanby is named after a well-known old-time performer, who won the Egmont and Taranaki Cups.
