USING THE GEARS.

•■ The gear-box is embodied in the transmission system of a motor for the purpose of easing the work of the engine, as.when climbing lulls or pulling through heavy, places. For the mere sako of .experiencing a. sense of conquest, many motorists make the mistake of trying- to surmount every hill on top gear; as a, matter of fact, most drivers, employ their lower speed ratios far too little; and, again, too many wait until the engine begins to labour : on a lise before changing, when, as often as not, they are compelled to drop to a still lower gear before the hill is surmounted. Oil topping' the grade the driver should wait until the engine has accelerated before throwing in the higher gear. Because of the comparative noisiness of most motors when the lower gears are 'in operation, many drivers refrain from using them us frequently as they should. The noise is not harmful; in fact, the careful driver will be enabled to judge of the efficiency or otherwise of his engine by the -"singing" of the gears.
