THE MELANESIAN MISSION

In a circular to church people in the AVellington diocese, Mr. James W. Henderson, hon. secretary and treasurer of the Melanesian Mission, says :—" I have pleasure in; reminding all parishioners throughout the.diocese that Sunday, 4th March, is the day appointed by Synod for taking the annual offertory on behalf of the Melanesian Mission. The'recent appeal made to the New Zealand Church, to take upon itself a larger share of the cost of this—it« own —mission, and so relieve the Mother Church at. the present crisis, has begun to bear fruit. The .contributions from New Zealand for 1916 show.a very acceptable increase, being over £7000 for the year, easily a- record. During 1916, for various reasons—one being economy—>the Southern Cross only made one trip. This effected a saving of about £1000, and with the increased revenue received, left a very substantial balance in the treasurer's, hands at the end of the year. This surplus will enable the mission authorities to inaugurate some much-needed extensions of the work which, for lack of funds, have had to be postponed from time to time. The various dioceses in the province have contributed (exclusive of paymente for "Southern Cross Logs") as follows :■—Auckland, £1516 .11s 3d; Christchurch, £1359 13s lid; Wellington, £1350 19s 2d; Waiapu, £1222 5s 2d; Dunedin, £594 3s sd; Nelson,' £206 Us Id; the .N.Z.C.M.S., £254 10s; and from the H. and W. Williams Memorial Trust, £500."
