HAZEL BEPTON AT LYTTELTON

The New Zealand Refrigerating Company's new' schooner Hazel Itepton, -which reached Lyttelton on Tuesday from Newcastle on her first visit to New Zealand, had a protracted passage of 30 days. It was seventeen days before the vessel reached Farewell Spit, and a further three days elapsed before The Brothers were reached, the vessel being frequently blown back to Stephen Island. For four days the Hazel Kepton endeavoured to clear Cape Campbell, but it was only the presence of the easterly wind of the past two days that enabled her to make much headway. Although classed as a two-masted schooner, the vessel is practically a scow, the only difference being that she has her bilges rounded up, and the deck is so' constructed that the greater nortion of her freight is curried in the hold. The vessel is 100 ft long and 32ft wide, with a carrying capacity of 60,000 ft of timber on a draught of sft 9in. The Hazel Kepton is only twelve months old. Captain Harris, who is in command, is no stranger to these waters. For many years he was in the schooner trade and has many trips to his credit in the 'old Bell Flower, which was lost some five years ago oil Banks Peninsula. Mr G. Munro is mate, -and he, too, has been engaged at intervals in the intercolonial service. After completing discharge, the vessel-will be fitted to suit the convenience of her new owners, the New Zealand Refrigerating Company, who intend to use her in conjunction with the Morning Light an" Eunice in lightering operations at Wanganui
