WEATHER IN AUGUST
. Rain fell in Wellington on 17 days during August. The first part of the month was very unsettled. The total rainfall was 4.35 in, the maximum l.Olin being registered on the 13th. The barometer was subject to great extremes, the maximum 9 a.m. reading being 30.583 on the 27th and the minimum 28.975 on the 21st., The highest temperature was recorded on the 31st, when the thermometer reached 59.1deg. * The minimum air temperature was. 35deg, registered on the 26th. During the .month there were eight frosts, 9deg of frost on the 26th being the severest. The maximum wind was on the 4th, when for the 24 hours 626 miles was recorded. The temperature of the earth increased at lft from the surface by 2deg (from 49.5deg. to 51.5deg.1, while at 3ft the month began and ended with the ■ temperature at 50.5deg. Southerly winds were recorded on 14 days and northerlies on .17 day 6. On the 25th there was. a difference between the maximum and minimum temperatures of 22.1deg.
