EAST AFRICA
GENERAL BOTHA'S STATEMENT
PHENOMENAL PROGRESS MADE.
DURBAN, 16th August.
General Botha stated, in an interview, that in addition to the arduousness of operations in the almost impenetrable forests in German East Africa, sickness had been rampant amongst men and beasts. The distances to be traversed were enormous. The German Askaris were admirably led, and were fine fighters, and their machine-gun" detachments were worthy of respect. Notwithstanding these obstacles, the progress of the British had been phenomenal.
