A CRIME OF THREE YEARS AGO
OFFENDER SENT TO GAOL FOR
FIVE YEARS,
'A chai'ge of indecent assault, described by the Crown Prosecutor (Mr. V. R. Meredith) as a very serious and aggravated offence, was preferred against a middle-aged man named John Dome, alias Owen, at the Supreme Court yesterday afternoon, before his Honour Mr. Justice Chapman and a jury of which Mr. James Wort was foreman. The accused was defended by Mr. H. F. O'Leary.
Mr. Meredith said that the evidence to bo led for the Crown would be that the offence was committed at Upper Hutt on sth October, 1913. Subsequently the accused man disappeared, and all search for him was unavailing until 13th July of this year, when he was arrested at.Wanganui. Counsel, continuing, referred to statements made by the accused at the time of his arrest, 'practically admitting his guilt.
The jury, after a short retirement, returned a verdict of guilty, and the accused was sentenced to five years' imprisonment with hard labour.
