THE MEN OF THE PHILOMEL AND PYRAMUS
APPEAL FOR CHRISTMAS GIFTS.
Last year we published an appeal at the- request of the British and foreign. Sailors' Society, Wellington, for tinned fruits and vegetables to be sent to the men on active service in the New Zealand battleships. Tho appeal was very well responded to by the Wellington and district public, the result being- that quite a large consignment of cases of tinned fruit, etc., was sent, freight free, by the Defence Minister. These gifts reached the ships in good condition. An «i**sowlodgment sent to the donors liens from Lommander-Capt. Hail-Thompson, H.M.S. -Philomel, shows how very much ths goods were appreciated. Unfortunately these warships aro still required to be on active service in what has . been described 05 the hottest spot on oa.rth. While doing everything- for tie brave soldier sons who are fighting our battles, the men of these New Zealand battleships must not be forgotten The British and Foreign Sailors' Society, Wellington, again makes the request for similar gifts this year. Commander HallThompson suggests in a. letter: "If it were possible to 'send very thin whito clothing, singlets and shorts, for the men, they would be very highly valued where they are." (The Government does not provide these articles.) Also suitable are tinned tongues, tinned vegetables, tinned fruits, and gramophone records. The Ladies' Guild of the British and Foreign Sailors' Society, Wellington Branch, proposes shortly to ha.ye a local street flower saJe to raise the necessary funds required to purchase the white garments above referred to, about 600 suits in all. This sale will no doubt attain its worthy object.
Gifts of the other goods (or donations with which to purchaso them) will bo received by the honorary secretary of the British and Foreign Sailors' Society, Mr. Hamilton Nimmo, 42, Kent-terraoe.
