THE RUSSIAN SUCCESSES
GENERAL BRUSILOFF'S CAPTURES
. _ PETROGRAD, 27th June. A Russian official communique states : Numerous attempts by the German infantry to take the offensive on our northern sectors,: especially in the Lutsk district, have been easily repulsed.
Heavy bombardments on the Stochod and middle Strypa fronts continue. General Brusiioff reports that the captures from 4th to 23rd June total 4031 officers, 194,041 men, 219 guns, 644 machine guns, 195 bomb mortars, and 38 searchlights.
During the crossing of the Dniester, parties of Don Cossacks swam across naked, carrying only their rifles. On reaching the other bank they attacked the enemy with the bayonet, and held the position until reinforced. *
KOVEL DEFENCES BEING STRENGTHENED
PETROGRAD, 28th June. One hundred thousand men, including many prisoners, are strengthening the defences of Kovel, extending ten miles from the town. The Don Cossacks are crossing the Dniester, south-west of Bucacz, and threaten Kolomea. It is expected that the Cossacks will sweep round the Cherniava River from the west.
REFUGEES IN RUMANIA.

' / ..BUCHAREST, 28th June. Three hundred and ten Austrians who took- refuge in Rumania have been disarmed. An Austrian officer remarked : "The Russian artillery is superior to ours. It is impossible to withstand the Cossacks."
