ZOOLOGICAL SOCIETY
At a- meeting of;the Wellington Zoological Society at Mr. Castle's room, Newtown, last- evening, a number of additions to the bird section of the Zoo were announced. These . included two Sevastopol geese, a bullfinch, a red-pole, cinnamon canaries, Norwich canaries, goldfinch and canary mules, pair of Regent birds, pair black-headed niannikins, pair white-headed mannikins, and pair amadavat. In addition Miss E. j^aldicotthad given a white parrot, Mrs. Brown a -turtle-dove, and Messrs. Jamieson and M'Gregor a horse.
A pair of camels, one of which the society will pay for, may arrive shortly, and negotiations are in train for the puicha.se' of.,four ostriches. Some native pigeon's should also come to hand in a few. days. , ' '
The question of the purchase of an elephant was discussed, and it was decided that information be obtained regarding ' prices from' Africa, India, and Australia.
The question of proper provision for the breeding of sea-lions in the Zoo, ami suitable accommodation.for sea-leopards, was discussed, and the meeting authorised'the chairman and the secretary to submit to the City Council the views of the society.
The secretary reported that the "Zoo Guide," published lasfeOctober, had bec'.i disposed of. The cosff of. the Guide was £54 ss, and the total receipts £55 Os Bd, a net profit of 15s Bd. In: addition tv the sales the society presented, aboul. tliree hundred copies to members of the Expeditionary Forces, and several hundreds were presented to advertisers,^ to members of the society, and to persons in New Zealand and other, parts, o.f the world who were interested in zoology. The Rev. E. Drake was elected a member of the society.
