THE ARAMAC CASE.

.Captain H. G. Shaw, Assistant* Shipping Master, and Mr. A. Campbell, engineer of tha Marine Board, forwarded a joint report to the Marine Board apropos o. the Ararnac case mentioned in this cok umn last Saturday. T'cie report sots out that the accident' was caused by'the engines failing to move when required, and they also considered that the master took every reasonable precaution in handling his ship, and'had no reason to fear a failure of the engine to work. They, therefore, did not consider thut any blame could ba attached to the master. They considered that the evidence of the chief engineer, _with regard to the starting gear aud tunung_ gear, was rather contradictory, and did not quito. agree with the fourth engineer's statement. They were also of the opinion that the cause* of the steam reversing gear jamming in this manner it did, and subsequently working quite satisfactorily after being started by the hydraulic pump attached—which is also the hand gear for manipulating the link motion—and without anything further being done to it, was "duo to the absence of water in tho hydraulic cylinder, _ which was essential to the good working of this engine (i.e., the steam reversing gear engine), the responsibility of whichduty (the filling of the cylinder) rested upon the chief engineer. The Marine Board concurred with the report, and considered that the chief engineer should be more alive to his responsibilities. And he was cautioned to be more careful in future.
