MAGISTRATE'S COURT

Mr. W. G. RiddeJJ, S.M.. presided at the Magistrate's Court this morning. Four first offenders were convicted and discharged for drunkenness, and Harry Dunn, a second offender, was fined 10s, in default 4S hours' imprisonment. William Brady was convicted and discharged for drunkenness, and for the use of indecent language he was fined 40s, or 7 days' imprisonment.

Arthur Gray, who used obscene language in a tramcar, was fined £3, with the alternative of 14 days' imprisonment, and a similar penalty for the use of obscene language was imposed on William Tally.

Thomas Andrew. Parnell, a taxi driver, and Frederick Alfred Fox, a soldier in uniform, were charged with having made use of threatening behaviour. The proceeding arose out of a scuffle in ■ Lamb-ton-quay last . night, when Fox, who thought he had been insulted by Parnell,' struck the latter. Fox pleaded guilty, and Parnell, for whom Mr. O'Leary appeared, pleaded not guilty. After hearing the evidence the Magistrate held that Fox had been the aggressor, and fined him 40s, in default 7 days' imprisonment. Parnell was discharged. ■ William Joseph Wright pleaded guilty to charges of having failed to account for moneys, amounting to £8 18s 7d, which he had collected on behalf of his employers, the Wellington Bread Co. Inspector Hendrey said that accused had joined the 17th Reinforcements, and had been arrested at Trentham. He had been a carter in the employ of the company for a number of years. That morning his wife had handed to the detective the amount of the money which accused had misappropriated. The .
