LYTTELTON WATERFRONT TROUBLE.
Difficulty in engaging gangs to work the Melbourne and the Petone at Lyttelton this week drew attention to 'the fact that the Lyttelton Waterside Workers' Union is still under the old agreement and on the old wages. Lyttelton, with Dunedin, Auckland, and Wellington, refused to accept the first proposed agreement, objecting to the clause regarding work after 1Q p.m. Before the second conference was held tho Lyttelton men commenced to put pressure on the employers by starting work an hour later than was the usual custom and threatening'to cease earlier. These tactics were, .discontinued, however, when the modified was accepted, by other* unions in the Federation. Lyttelton then attempted to conclude a separate agreement, with no 10 p.m. clause, but [ailed, and it was stated that the dispute was to be referred to the Arbitration Court. Apparently the men have not felt inclined to wait this long while other watersiders were enjoying higher rates.
