WELLINGTON RENTS

10 THE EDITOR. Sir,—l see in to-night's Post there is to be a deputation from the officers of the Trades Council re above I regret to say these men and this class of men are the main cause of high rents, as propertyholders are so disgusted with such claptrap_ that they are disposing of. their properties so as to get rid of the insults. I am thoroughly ' satisfied no man with a grain of common sense will invest his money in_ residential property, for letting purposes in Wellington. I would like the deputation to show the public the enormous interest—over and above interest upon mortgage, collection' of rents, rates,' insurance, painting, papering, and general upkeep, loss of rent, to say nothing about depreciation—suburban property-holders have been receiving for the past six years, or even at the present rent, and 1 will guarantee, unless tho property is in the heart of the city, it is not 2 per cent. My bitter oxperienco is that propertyholders, have been benevolent institutions for a long iimo without any sympathy or redress from the tenant. Now that a failrent is asked, they are up hi arms. My suggestion to the deputation is: Be men; bear your own burden, purchase your own home, encourage others to _do likewise, but don't encourage pauperism by trying to take your landlord down. Be good citizens and feel you have an interest ia tho country. Property-holders are offering every inducement to buyers from £5 deposit and upwards, the . Government is also' making liberal offers. What more does the deputation require? Depend upon it, rents cannot go down in Wellington in the near future. —I am, etc., LANDLORD. 3rd May, 1916. '
